Facade paint by the sea: salt air and damp

Salt air, sun and damp are hard on Costa Brava facades. Here is which type of paint to choose and how to prepare the wall first.

What happens to a facade near the sea

On the coast, a wall gets strong sun, rain, wind and salty air. Salt stays on the surface and damp gets in through cracks and joints. That is why interior paint does not work outside: you need paint made for exterior use.

At Suministros Barrero we are Blatem paint distributors and we stock smooth, textured and elastic facade paints. You can see them in our Blatem paints category.

Acrylic, mineral, siloxane or elastic

  • Acrylic. The most common choice for facades. It lasts better outside than an interior emulsion.
  • Silicate mineral. It lets the wall breathe. It works well for damp and old houses.
  • Siloxane. A facade paint that repels water and lets vapour out of the wall. If you are interested, ask us in store which option we have for your case.
  • Elastic. It forms a layer that follows small movements in the wall. It suits facades with fine cracks.

To choose, look at the wall: whether it is damp, whether it has cracks and what it is made of.

Before painting: damp and cracks

Do not paint over active damp. Fix the leak first and let the wall dry. If it is minor, use a specific anti-damp paint.

If the facade has cracks, fill them first with elastic facade mortar or filler. Let it dry well before painting over it.

For terraces, roofs and balconies we have the Blatem waterproofing system: walkable acrylic rubber, liquid polyurethane membranes, flexible mortars and elastic anti-crack coatings. You will find it in the waterproofing category.

Railings and gates near salt air

Iron near the sea rusts. For railings and gates, Blatem direct-to-rust anti-rust enamel (DOX) needs no primer. You will find it in the enamels category.

The facade colour

We mix the colour on the spot with our tinting machine. You can bring a sample or give us the NCS or RAL code.

Send us photos of your facade on WhatsApp and we will tell you which paint and which preparation it needs.
