Painting radiators is a job many people put off, but it makes a huge difference in a home here in Lloret de Mar. Over time, heat turns the original paint yellow or small rust spots appear. You cannot use just any paint. You need an enamel that handles temperature changes without cracking. I will show you how to do it so the finish looks professional.

Prepare the surface before you start

The biggest mistake is painting a dirty radiator. The surface must be cold. If you just turned it off, wait for it to cool down completely. Clean off dust and grease with a cloth and a household cleaner.

If the radiator has peeling paint or rust, you need to sand it. Use a medium-grit sandpaper. You do not have to remove all the paint, just scuff the surface and take off the loose bits. If you see bare metal with rust, apply a protective base. At our shop on the Costa Brava, we recommend Blatem enamels made for these surfaces because they stand up to heat.

Tools and materials you need

For a column radiator, put away the big rollers. You need tools that reach into tight gaps.

  • Radiator brush: This is a brush with a long handle and an angled head. The Pentrilo radiator brush is great because you do not have to strain your back reaching the rear parts.
  • Small foam or microfiber roller: For the flat front parts, a 5 or 11 cm roller gives a smoother finish than a brush.
  • Painter's tape: Use Pentrilo Accured Mask tape to protect the valves and the wall behind if you are not taking the radiator down.
  • Paint: A specific radiator enamel in shades like RAL 9010 Pure white or NCS S 0500-N.

The painting process step by step

1. Protection: Cover the floor with paper or plastic. Enamel is thinner than wall paint and drips more easily.
2. Priming: If the radiator is new or you sanded off a lot of rust, apply a coat of technical primer. Check the data sheet for drying times.
3. First coat: Start on the difficult areas with the angled brush. Do not load too much paint or it will run. Then, use the roller on the flat areas.
4. Second coat: Let it dry for the time suggested by the maker. Two thin coats always look better than one thick one.

For colors, the NCS (Natural Colour System) helps us find exact shades. If you want the radiator to match your wall, we can mix a custom color for you in our tinting machine in Lloret de Mar.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not turn the heating on right after painting. The enamel needs to cure. If the heat rises suddenly while the paint is soft, bubbles can form or the smell will be much stronger. Wait at least 24 to 48 hours depending on how much air gets into the room.

Another mistake is using plastic wall paint. Wall paint does not stretch with heat. It will flake off as soon as winter arrives in Girona.

Air-Bosq fragrances and color temperature

The color of a radiator changes how a room feels. When you pick shades from the NCS or RAL charts, you can match them with Air-Bosq air fresheners:

  • A radiator in RAL 9010 Pure white feels clean and fresh. It goes well with the AQUA fragrance and its notes of sea jasmine and bergamot.
  • If you choose a technical tone like RAL 7035 Light grey, the room feels modern and orderly. This pairs well with FIERO and its base of cedar and musk.
  • For classic cream tones like NCS S 1005-Y20R, the COLONIA scent with vanilla and coffee notes adds to that cozy feeling.

Scent marketing helps your home or shop in La Selva feel renewed and gives it a clear identity.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use normal wall paint for the radiator?
No, plastic paint does not handle temperature changes and will crack quickly. You must use a specific radiator enamel.

Do I need to sand the radiator if the paint is in good shape?
It is best to use a fine sandpaper to dull the shine and scuff the surface. This makes sure the new coat of enamel sticks properly.

How long should I wait to turn on the heating?
Wait at least 24-48 hours so the enamel cures fully. This depends on the humidity in areas like the Costa Brava.

What do I do if the radiator has rust spots?
Sand the area down to the metal, clean off the dust, and apply an anti-rust primer before the final enamel.

How do I avoid brush marks?
Use a quality Pentrilo brush for the corners and finish flat surfaces with a small foam roller using thin coats.
