NCS Natural Colour System: A Quick Guide to Understanding the Codes
The NCS system describes color based on how the human eye perceives it, rather than pigment mixtures. Once you understand the logic behind its codes, choosing a color is no longer a matter of luck.

How an NCS Code is Built
A code such as S 2010-Y30R is read as follows:
- S indicates it belongs to the NCS Standard (the official edition).
- 20 is the blackness (darkness).
- 10 is the chromaticness (how far it is from gray).
- Y30R is the hue: yellow with 30% red.
Why Professional Painters Prefer It
NCS covers the entire visible spectrum with more than 1,950 standard colors and allows for any intermediate shade. RAL, by contrast, works with more limited charts (RAL Classic features 213 colors). For interior design, NCS offers the precision that decoration demands.
