RAL Classic vs. RAL Design: When to Use Each System
If you've ever been asked for 'RAL 7016,' you know it's a standard. However, the RAL Design chart features nearly ten times as many colors and solves projects where RAL Classic falls short.

RAL Classic: The Industrial Standard
RAL Classic codes consist of four digits (RAL 9010, RAL 7016, RAL 1015…). Established in 1927 to standardize colors for German industry, today they are the universal language for:
- Aluminum and PVC joinery (windows, blinds, doors).
- Metal structures and street furniture.
- Machinery and industrial vehicles.
RAL Design: When Classic Falls Short
RAL Design System+ uses a seven-digit code based on hue, lightness, and chroma (HLC). It features 1,825 colors and covers nuances that RAL Classic ignores: greiges, muted olive greens, terracottas…
Practical Recommendations
- If your joinery is already in a RAL Classic shade, match that same code for wall paint or touch-ups.
- For facades and restoration projects requiring specific chromatic criteria, request RAL Design or NCS.
